Biodiversity and species

The ocean is home to some of the planets most awe-inspiring species. From the iconic blue whale and giant leatherback turtles to the smallest algae and soaring albatross, each have a critical part to play in this vast interconnected ecosystem.

Biodiversity and Species are not only intrinsically important in supporting the food chain and keeping our seas teaming with life but also are the basis for many of the reasons we are drawn to the ocean with such fascination.

Marine species are however under threat with severe declines seen in fish populations over recent decades, as well as in sharks and rays, marine turtles, marine mammals and sadly many others.

This theme will facilitate discussion and action around specific protections for species and enhancing biodiversity which is vital for healthy ocean ecology, both directly and indirectly underpinning millions of livelihoods across the globe.
